Discover the Best of Toronto’s Craft Beer Scene with Canadian Craft Tours

Toronto’s craft beer scene is thriving, and there’s no better way to explore it than with Canadian Craft Tours’ Toronto Brewery Tour. Whether you're a seasoned beer enthusiast or just looking for a fun and unique outing, our guided tours offer an unforgettable experience, taking you behind the scenes of some of the city's most beloved breweries.

A Brief History of Brewing in Toronto

In the 19th century, breweries and taverns were staples in every Ontario town, fueled by a strong British influence where soldiers were entitled to six pints of beer daily. Early settlers brought their brewing traditions with them, and beer quickly became central to local economies, particularly in towns like London, Ontario, where Carling and Labatt established breweries to supply British troops. However, the onset of Prohibition from 1916 to 1927 devastated the industry, reducing Ontario’s breweries from over 300 to about 70. Entrepreneur E.P. Taylor seized this opportunity to consolidate struggling breweries, shaping the Canadian beer landscape with a focus on light, easy-drinking lagers. By the 1960s, the "big three"—Molson, Labatt, and Taylor’s Carling O’Keefe—dominated the market, leaving little room for diversity in beer styles.

This dominance lasted until the 1980s when the craft beer movement began to challenge the status quo. Jim Brickman launched Ontario's first craft brewery, Brick Brewing, in 1984 after being inspired by European beers. His success sparked a wave of craft breweries, including Steamwhistle and Upper Canada Brewing, led by passionate entrepreneurs like Frank Heaps. These pioneers emphasized traditional brewing methods, quality ingredients, and unique flavours, fostering a culture of innovation and independence. Today, Ontario boasts a thriving craft beer scene with breweries like Great Lakes Brewery, Left Field Brewery, and Henderson Brewery, which have garnered international acclaim. While some brands like Sleeman and Upper Canada are now owned by global corporations, the spirit of craft brewing remains strong, offering beer lovers a diverse range of styles and flavours to enjoy.
