If you haven’t been to Banded Peak since the late summer of 2018, you owe yourself a visit. While it originally opened in mid-2016 at the north end of the Barley Belt, not far east from the south (Red) line of the LRT, and just south of Burnsland Cemetery, it has completely renovated its taproom. The former tasting room has now become consumed by the brewing system.
As of 2020, Banded Peak Brewing was bought out by Labatt Breweries of Canada, founded in 1847 Labatt is the largest brewer in Canada.
Behind the bar they have 14 taps containing the wide variety of beers Banded Peak makes, including collaborations with other breweries. They always have their four core brands on hand; Chinook Saison, Plainsbreaker Pale Ale, Summit Seeker IPA, and Southern Aspect IPA, plus whatever else they have in the tanks. You’ll also find seasonally, so check their website to keep up-to-date as to what’s pouring.
A small kitchen was added with the renovations, which makes light snacks. At the front is also a cooler with their canned product available for purchase, plus Annex Ales sodas, kombucha, and juices. This is one of the first Calgary breweries to have its own growler station, allowing their product to be sold fresh in 1L cans in addition to the normal growler fills.
What was formerly a tiny non-descript area is now a well laid out space for 130 people, including high tables and one of the longest bars in Calgary, with seating for about a dozen on both sides on the far end away from the taps. There is also an open area close to the entrance, with two large garage doors which lead to the 45-person patio on the east side of the building.
They are open Wednesday-Thursday 3:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. and Friday-Saturday 12:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m. and Sunday 1:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. Closed Monday and Tuesday. Tasters, flights, sleeves, pints, growler fills, and package product are all available.
