It took a while to come to fruition, but the wait was worth it. What began as an idea in 2016 finally opened in June of 2018. Prairie Dog Brewing has one of the largest spaces of any new brewery in Calgary, located just off the south (Red) line of the LRT in the busy area around Chinook Centre Shopping Mall.
The room is bright and open, with the large centrally located bar providing plenty of room to sit around. There are about 200 seats inside the restaurant, including several in a secluded private area off to the side, plus a few table games. The open kitchen may be the largest of any brewpub in Calgary, and the main attraction is Clifford, the Big Red BBQ Pit from Mesquite, Texas (the largest in Canada), which can cook 1800 lbs. of locally sourced meat and vegetables at a time. Naturally, the menu trends towards Texas-style barbeque, with a large selection of starters, entrees, and platters, many beer-infused. You’ll also find desserts and a kid’s menu.
Because of the room’s open concept, the 12 hl. brewing system is in full view. They have 20 taps, and their restaurant license allows them to have guest taps and cider. The plan is to eventually have about 10-12 of their own beers available. The beers are constantly rotating but expect to always find at least one IPA, some one-offs, brews from their pilot brewery, and a low alcohol beer. They are unique in that some of their own beers get piped in right from the brite tanks, not from kegs. They only package in kegs right now, so most of their beer is sold in the brewpub.
Prairie Dog is open Sunday, Tuesday-Thursday 11:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m., and close Friday and Saturday at midnight. Closed Mondays. Tasters, flights, pints, and growler fills are all available.
